Distributing Music on UGC Platforms: Rules and Tips to Avoid Rejections

Is your music not available on Instagram, Facebook, or TikTok? This might be due to recent changes in their rules to ensure original content and prevent duplicates. Below, we explain what UGC is and why some songs may not be accepted. What are "UGC" platforms? User Generated Content (UGC) platforms allow users to upload and share their own content. These include YouTube, SoundCloud, TikTok, and META platforms (Instagram and Facebook). To maintain a 100% original catalog, these platforms have tightened their policies to prevent repeated or non-exclusive content. Types of content that will be rejected on UGC platforms: Your music is likely to be rejected if it falls under any of the following categories: - Public Domain Works: Recordings, samples, or manipulations of classical or public domain works are not accepted. - Generic Sounds: White noise, songs with a duration of less than a minute, environmental sounds (such as animal noises), phone tones, laughter, movie snippets, or spoken words without music are not allowed. - Use of Commercial Loops or Samples: Beats or sounds from commercial sample packs are not accepted. You can only use loops or samples if they are 100% original. - DJ Mixes, Full Albums, or Compilations: Files containing multiple tracks within a single file, such as DJ mixes, compilations, or full albums, are not permitted. - Non-Exclusive Licensed Content: If you purchased music from soundtrack libraries or production catalogs but do not hold an exclusive license (i.e., you are not the sole distributor), it cannot be distributed. - Soundalike Versions, Covers, or Karaoke/Instrumentals: Imitations of existing songs, cover versions, and karaoke or instrumental versions are not allowed. - Live Versions Too Similar to the Original: If your live version is nearly identical to the studio recording, it may be considered a duplicate and rejected. - Remixes of Songs by Other Artists: You can only distribute remixes if you have the necessary rights or licenses. - Re-recorded, Remastered, or Remixed Versions: You cannot distribute these versions unless you own the original master recording. How to avoid your music being rejected? To ensure your content is accepted on these platforms, follow these recommendations: ✅ Create 100% original content: Avoid using commercial samples or loops unless you have exclusive rights. ✅ Register your music: Make sure you have the distribution rights to your songs. If your music has been rejected by any of these platforms, don’t worry! It will still be available on other major platforms like Spotify. Follow these guidelines and maximize your music distribution! 🎶

What Happens When You Switch from a PRO to Basic Subscription on Indiefy? Consequences and Considerations for Artists

What You Lose When Switching from PRO to Basic Switching from a PRO subscription to our Basic plan is an important decision. We want you to clearly understand the changes this entails. By moving to Basic, you will lose access to advanced tools and features exclusive to PRO, and any release published only under the PRO plan will be removed from those stores. Your releases will remain available only on platforms included in the Basic plan, such as Spotify, Deezer, Tidal, Amazon Music, Trebel and more. Key Differences Between PRO and Basic Indiefy offers two types of subscriptions: PRO and Basic. While the PRO plan provides advanced tools and broader distribution coverage, the Basic plan is designed for artists who want a free option with limited reach. Here’s a summary of the main changes when switching from PRO to Basic: Access to Distribution Platforms With a PRO plan, your releases can be published on more digital stores, reaching a wider audience. When switching to Basic, your releases will only remain on a limited number of platforms. Stores exclusive to PRO will no longer display your releases, which could impact your music’s visibility. Removal of Releases from Exclusive Stores When switching to Basic, your releases will be removed from premium stores available only to PRO users. While your songs will still be on major platforms like Spotify, Deezer, and Amazon Music, they may disappear from other stores that offered additional exposure and royalty revenue. Access to Advanced Tools The PRO plan includes tools that help boost your career: metadata editing, official artist profile management, detailed statistics, access to Content ID, distribution on UGC platforms, and a lower royalty withdrawal threshold. Switching to Basic will remove these features, limiting your options to maximize your music’s reach. We understand that this change may be disappointing and could affect your music’s availability. However, this policy ensures we maintain the quality standards of our partner stores while providing a premium experience for PRO users.

YouTube Topic Channel: What Is It and How Does It Work for Artists?

Topic Channel When your music is distributed on YouTube, the platform automatically generates a channel with your artist name. This channel is not managed by you, since it is created directly by YouTube, and therefore you don’t have access to control it. These are called Topic Channels, and they are the first place where your music appears on YouTube. To take control of your presence on the platform, you need to convert that Topic Channel into your Official Artist Channel (OAC). This process consists of linking the automatically generated Topic Channel with the personal channel you created yourself. By doing this, all your music, followers, and views will be merged into one single official space under your artist channel. What you need to know - All the music that appears on your Topic Channel can be transferred/merged into your own official YouTube page. - You won’t lose any views from the videos that are transferred. - You won’t lose any subscribers from the Topic Channel: they will be added to the subscribers of your official page! Step-by-step guide Important: You must first upgrade to our PRO service in order to request your Official Artist Channel. 1. Identify the Topic Channel associated with your music that you want to merge. 2. Make sure that ALL the music in these Topic Channels truly belongs to you. - If a Topic Channel with your music contains songs from other artists, you must write to artist-support@youtube.com and request that they remove the tracks that don’t belong to you before continuing. 3. Request your Official Artist Channel once you have identified the Topic Channel and confirmed that it only contains your music. How to Get an Official Artist Channel on YouTube? Why doesn’t my Topic Channel include my artist name? In many cases, YouTube places an artist’s music in channels titled “Various Artists – Topic” or “Release – Topic.” This usually happens because the creation of Topic Channels is an automated process used by the platform to index content from lesser-known artists or those with fewer plays.

Indiefy: Guidelines on Prohibited and Limited Content for Digital Music Distribution

Indiefy is a platform created for independent artists to share new music on Spotify and the most relevant platforms around the world with our digital music distribution services. Taking the above into account, there is certain content that we cannot distribute or that can be distributed with limitations in some stores or territories depending on the particularities of each case. Releases can be reopened or rejected if it falls into any of the following issues: - Traditional content: Refers to music that is characteristic of certain countries or regions. This can include national anthems, children's songs or rhymes, music of oral tradition, among others. - Generic content: This can be tracks that are built only with samples and loops without many modifications/edits, tracks that are too short (less than 1 minute), white noise, sounds of nature, among others. - Religious content: Includes sacred music, praises and any type of songs used in the tradition of any religion from anywhere in the world. On the contrary, religious music can be accepted as long as it is new and original. - Holiday music: These are songs or music related to specific seasons or celebrations such as Christmas carols or any other celebration from anywhere in the world. - Public Domain: Includes works by authors whose date of death exceeds the time established by the applicable copyright laws in each country, also includes traditional music, among others. This content can sometimes be accepted as long as they are reinterpretations with arrangements and recordings of the artist/performer´s own. If your release is reopened for these reasons you will need to check that you have the right to do so however Indiefy may reserve the right to post this type of content.

How to Meet Quality Standards When Uploading Music to Spotify and Other Digital Platforms

When Indiefy music distribution to get your art into the platforms it is important that the tracks in your release meet the standards that the stores require. This does not mean that you have to record in large studios in order to distribute music as technology becomes more advanced and accessible. Today we have tools that artists like The Beatles did not have at the time, to give an example. There are currently different hardware tools (microphones, interfaces, MIDI controllers) and software (Digital Audio Workstations, Sample Libraries, virtual instruments) that can help you have a sound that matches your artistic project. We can't tell you exactly what you should sound like since that depends a lot on your creative freedom, however, there are certain specific cases in which we won't be able to publish your music. These are: - Silences in the audio: If the material you distribute has more than 10 seconds of silence at any moment of the track - Track too short or too long: The minimum duration of a track must be 1 minute (with exceptions in intros or outros that have consistency in an album) and a maximum of 20 minutes. - Very high or very low volume: Despite the fact that Indiefy and the stores try to normalize the audio levels, it is recommended to comply with the standards set out in this Spotify article. - Low Audio Quality: Releases that are recorded on cell phones contain distorted audio or any other issue that makes it difficult to listen clearly may be rejected. If you avoid the previous points you will be able to complete the digital distribution of your music.
