How do publishing royalties work?
When you write or compose a song, publishing royalties are generated whenever the track is played, sold, or publicly performed. These earnings are collected by Performance Rights Organizations (PROs / CMOs) in each country.
What is an IPI / CAE Code and how do you get one?
An IPI number (Interested Parties Information), also referred to as a CAE number by some organizations, is a unique international identification number assigned to every songwriter, composer, and publisher worldwide.
How to obtain your IPI code:

Join a Performance Rights Organization: When you sign up and get approved by a PRO (such as BMI, ASCAP, PRS for Music, SACM, or SGAE), you are automatically entered into the global composer database.

Automatic Assignment: Your unique IPI number is generated and attached to your account profile within 1 to 4 weeks after your membership is approved.

Locate it on your dashboard: Log in to your PRO account portal to view your 9 to 11-digit IPI number.
Without an IPI code, industry entities and publishing administrators cannot accurately identify you as the writer of a song to payout your songwriting royalties.

Where should you register?

In your country of residence: The standard approach is to join your local PRO. These entities hold international agreements (via the CISAC network) to collect royalties generated overseas and transfer them to your local account.

With international entities: If your main audience is located in North America or your country lacks a local PRO, US organizations such as BMI or ASCAP accept international songwriters.
