Publishing your release is one of the many steps you need to do in order to get your music heard. Here you will find some tips on what you can do to be discovered by more people and increase your fanbase.
It seems hard sometimes to get your music heard but there are many things you can do to improve the performance of your releases on digital stores as well as outside the internet. Many of these things you can do by yourself as an independent artist without spending too much time that drives you out of making music.
- Identify your audience: You don´t need to be at the top of all charts to be successful and make some money with your music, you need to find your correct audience and focus efforts on reaching them. One important thing about music is identity and connection so don´t spend time and money trying to get everyone to know your name but instead define who is the kind of people you make your music for. This will also help you to decide what kind of content you create and where you show it which takes us to...
- Keep your social media page active (and preferably focus on one platform): It seems to be obvious sometimes but the goal is not only to create content but to make content that get your fanbase engaged and that is likeable for the platform where you pretend to show it so it is recommendable to focus in one at first or make content that is compatible for different platforms like reels you can share in TikTok and Instagram or pictures from Instagram to Facebook. Ask yourself if the content you create is what you would like to see and where would you do so. If you pay for campaigns on any of these platforms try to use parameters according to the audience you have identified such as the location of your listeners, what interests do they have, what other artists or genres they listen to, age, etc.
- Avoid fake campaigns: There are lots of companies that promise to give you a certain number of listeners or followers but you should be careful with this particularly with services that place your music on some playlist in exchange for money. You must proceed with caution since many of these services work with artificial streaming among other dishonest practices penalized by the stores and distributors.
- Pitch your music through the right channels: While paying for direct placements is not permitted by the stores the alternative is pitching your music. In this case, you will not be promised to get your music on some playlist or get a certain number of streams and followers but your music will be heard by real curators and get the chance to be included on legitimate playlists like the editorial playlist from Spotify. You can pitch upcoming releases from your Spotify for Artists dashboard. You can find more information about how to do it here. Other platforms to pitch your releases recommended and used by many artists and companies with years in the industry are Submithub and Daily Playlists.
It is important to be patient and consistent with your project so do not discourage if one of your releases doesn't take you where you want to be at first since persistence is what will take you there. In any case, every single, EP or album you publish will be one more thing to add to your portfolio and presskit so you can start to connect not only with your fans but with more people within the industry like managers, agents, bookers and others that can help you in the way.
